Reviews
You think about Van Gogh as emotionally disturbed, or as manic-depressive, or as poverty-stricken, or as wildly creative. But this book gives you something else. This book gives you Vincent Van Gogh, the beloved brother of Theo.Offering side-by-side glimpses of Vincent's work compared to other contemporary artists (sometimes painting the same scenes), this book is a good lesson in art history, as well as a biography.Very good biography for older grades. Lots of good artwork is included, some portraits and interiors, and always the tone of compassionate, devoted brother showing us his side of Vincent. Excellent. The book also includes some simple activities for your child to try.Vocabulary includes: Impressionists, allotment, veil, chiaroscuro, vibrate, radiant, corona, atelier, structure, shriveled, exhibitions...Parent notes: (obviously) mental disorders and depression, also self-mutilation and suicide.
